| :I imagine an SLR, but I am on the fence between a low end SLR (Canon XTi) or a high end point and shoot (Canon S3). Only a couple hundred bucks difference, but the lenses will get me on the SLR. All I have right now is a cheap little point and shoot and an old full manaul Pentax ME. Lenses are what makes a good shot. Put a great lens on an entry level body and you can get a good image. Put a poor lens on a pro level body and you'll get a crappy image, regardless how good a photographer you are. The low end lenses tend to be very soft until stopped down 4-5 stops, have decent amount of vignetting at the wider focal ranges, slow/loud/inaccurate autofocus mechanisms, excessive chromatic aberration, and a few other things but this sentence is getting pretty long. You get the point - invest in good lenses. Don't get me wrong, the prosumer and pro bodies are great but you could be paying for features you might not need. Prosumer bodies offer the best of both worlds so if you can afford it, I'd suggest a used Canon 20D or 30D, or a used Nikon D70s or D80 instead of buying a new entry level body. try FredMiranda.com and check out the Buy/Sell section for used camera gear. I buy most of my gear used and only use that site.
